The phantom of the opera

Sunday 15 December 2013

If i walked through the opera in Paris, would i possibly hear the angel of music?

Such is what i thought after i finished reading and watching the phantom of the opera.

The book was interesting to read, it is told by the writer himself who claims to have done research about the story of the opera ghost.
Christine Daaé has been blessed with a beautiful voice and she is convinced that her teacher is actually the angel of music of whom her father had spoken when he was still alive. Yet Raoul De Chagny, childhood friend, has another theory. The latter has loved Christine since he can remember and so a duel occurs between the angel of music and the young man. Still, he is faced with one issue, the angel of music is seemingly a ghost, the same ghost that occupies box five at the opera, and that curses anyone who dares to deny his requests.

As i kept reading, i did in fact fear the opera ghost because of his temper. Somehow i was bemused by the way his genius was described but i couldn't deny that he was quite unstable; i tried to unveil the secrets before they were revealed and all that were involved with the opera ghost, which made reading only more amusing.
Until the last moment, the result of the love triangle remained a mystery, but i found the end to be a bit accelerated.

Regarding the movie, there were quite some differences with the book, the opera ghost usually acted without revealing himself too much to the public because they would repel him for his ugliness ( in the book, the phantom has a much more frightening appearance than in the movie). There is a lot of singing during the movie ( more singing that speaking) but the words and the melody were quite enjoyable so it hadn't bothered me. The dances that were performed reminded me of Amadeus. As i watched, i remembered another story: Frankenstein from Mary Shelly.

The opera ghost and the monster of Frankenstein had similar feelings and had almost the same wish. The actors have done an excellent job and it was difficult to hold back some tears at the end. It's a brilliant, intriguing and touching movie regarding love and the passion for music, especially opera music. I believe it to be a great example of expressing emotions through music. If they had only spoken, i doubt it would have had the same result.

After discovering this story, I'm eager to go back to Paris, visit the Opera and remember the tale that highlighted this ancient theater. To think that i had been gazing at it thoughtfully and wondering what were behind those walls. I will certainly put it on my list.

Share your thoughts about the movie or the book in the comments.

See you soon!

VAMPS : Come On, we're ready!

Sunday 6 October 2013

vamps-concert-olympia-paris-france

While I was in Paris, i went to a concert with a great friend of a japanese band called: VAMPS. it's Hideto Takarai's ( hyde, pronounced "haido" by the fans) solo project. He is known to be the singer of japanese band "Laruku" ( Tetsuya's the leader).

I waited seven years to finally see Hyde live on stage. Due to my schedule, I was unable to attend Laruku's concert last year, so I wasn't going to miss this chance.

Après midi à Paris

Friday 4 October 2013

" An afternoon in Paris" based on a song from one of my favourite japanese bands. I had this song in mind as i walked in the streets of Paris, gazing at the Eiffel tour, and its beauty, despite the grey weather.
Even though we're in September, there were still so many tourists from all over the world discovering the city.
Paris has a special vibe whenever I set foot in it.

Edit & Let go ( yes do it! )

Saturday 21 September 2013

Hello everyone, how is it going?

As i had posted previously, I'm still on sabbatical regarding blog posting, but i wanted to share with you something I'm experiencing with editing.
In my previous post, I had explained that editing was one of the most important parts of writing your novel, but i should add now that it can be a frustrating experience.

Here are some tips I gathered from personal experience to get through it:

First steps in France

Tuesday 13 August 2013

The reason why i hadn't posted anything lately was because i was  far from the city and actually, being away from it was a great idea. I spent an amazing week in France in Salernes, surrounded by forests, lakes, and all of natures beauty ( including the frightening spiders).

i felt so inspired there, it was difficult to resist the urge of writing for hours, considering that even without being inspired i kept writing on my little notepad.

i did a lot of walking, climbing, exploring, learning. The few drawbacks were mostly the heath and the rudeness of some youth when they talk to each other. i find french to be a great language, especially old French from the aristocrats.

i also went to Toulon to see a great friend. She is like a sister to me, so you can imagine my joy when we finally met after writing to each other for years, i wasn't dissapointed and i'm looking forward to see her next time again.

As we walked down the streets, i saw a theatre and kept looking at it. Such a shame there wasn't any play to see.
it's really beautiful, i wish i could have entered there to see the stage.
But many places inspired me there, whether it was the forest or the architecture of some buildings, i found most of these places absolutely beautiful. If you have the opportunity, go and see!

During my walks in the forest, i saw some caves, some were frightening, i actually named one : Voldemort's cave. i tried to approach but felt a cold breeze, and decided that it was better to leave the mystery. i wasn't ready to greet a bear or a wolf or what could live there..
Still, learning about their culture, discovering the beauty of those cities and climbing to the top of the forest was very exciting, i felt like an adventurer, which only increased the inspiration. I hope to travel back there when i can, and spent more time.

The Rock'N'Roll Diaries

Tuesday 30 July 2013

I just finished reading  the "Rock'n'Roll Diaries".
Once i started, it was difficult for me to stop because it reminded me a lot of my adolescence.
The story is brilliant, or as the characters would say: "bloody brilliant"!

When you read the book, you sympathize with the characters, if your older than them, you'll probably see little you while reading.

The RockAteers is a band of four young teenagers, with different life styles, different education, different personalities, who decide to become the best rock band in the history. It looks like a mission impossible at first thought but it's like the magic of music can bring them together.
Not only is it about music but also about the daily life of teenagers who have to fight through the unpleasant period between childhood and adults, i believe each of us will recognize themselves in these four characters.

I find the writing quite realistic, either from the band or from the record label; which is a bit obvious considering the fact that Jamie Scallion is a performer and has toured in a band; he wrote the story while he was on the road. There are funny parts that will make you laugh, some sad parts and basically, we get to know the feelings of each characters because they hold a private diary.
The language is close to what i would describe as: teenage street language. There is some swearing but i believe it's part of a teen's life.

But to be clear, it's a great story! and I do enjoy rock bands and concerts, so this universe isn't very blurry to me.

Either they will succeed and make this a dream come true, or they will kill each other on the road.
It's a great gift for youngsters from 15 to higher!

Miracle: Yoshiki Hayashi

Friday 26 July 2013

I would like to present to you one of my favourite artists: Japanese multi artist Yoshiki Hayashi.

( If you are unfamiliar with the man, he's the composer of the Golden Globe theme song 2013 )

Today i was glad to receive news regarding a new masterpiece he had shared. I listened to the first notes and started enjoying it, and as the first vocal echoed with the melody, i stopped writing and listened to this breathtaking song the man had brought to life with his creativity.
I tried to get a mental picture of him performing this beautiful sound and perceive the feelings he put in it.
I fail to find the right words to describe it actually, it would be better to listen to it.

I am proud to be a fan of his work and am looking forward to hear the rest of his upcoming album ( release date: september 2013 ).

To think that from creating songs that would turn a concert hall upside down with the loud sounds of drums, guitars, bass and screaming public, he could create a classical, beautiful melody that combined various emotions.
But again, i'm drifting away, the best thing to do, is to listen to his art!

If you're interested to discover this live, the man will perform at the Grammy Museum the 26th of august :

Yoshiki Hayashi is well known as the leader and creator of the legendary japanese band X-Japan.
The band who reunited in 2008 are planning a second world tour in 2014.

Imagination

Friday 19 July 2013

world of our own
" How do you see it? "

I wonder if we can put into words our world of imagination.
Each has it somewhere, the key is to keep it alive so it
never dissapears in oblivion.
This illustration is to me a great example of how we see it.
it's colourful, bright and dark, and we're in the middle of it,
looking, listening, breathing it.

When do you enter this secret place that only you can see?

It can happen when you wish to go in there to look for a missing piece to something you're writing, or you're adding something to your little world, and let it mix inside to show up differently later. but the best way is to fall there suddenly, and see so much that it overwhelms you.
Personally, when i get an idea, i feel so excited because i want to know more and want to write already. I can sit in a corner and lay still, watching the story developping, enjoying it, twisting it
a bit when i feel like changing something.
I think it's really a fun moment to experience, and it's a good way to escape the little stress of our daily life.
You can see all kinds of things, it's a bit like children when they imagine they are pirates, or are afraid in the dark because they believe there's a monster under the bed.

How do you see your world of imagination?

Fail many times, but always get up

Tuesday 2 July 2013

It's something i repeat a lot to myself and i wanted you to hear it too.
It can be directed to a student, an artist, someone with a dream

I've seen people lose faith in themselves, some become mute, others go way too far, to a point that it shocks me.
Think of this when you fall : i'll get up!
Everyone has failed in something at least once in his life before succeeding in it.
Before creating or working something, you go through a draft, make mistakes,...don't erase them! but learn from them to make a better step.

If you fail in an exam, a project, something you've worked hard for, it's ok to sit down and cry, it's ok to need to be alone, but please afterwards get up, even alone, heal your wounds, harden your heart, learn from your mistakes, cherish what you won and try again, everytime, try, until you get what you want!
Don't see it as an end, nor as a closed door; see it as a wall you can break, or an obstacle you can jump over!
No one succeeded the first time, we all walk in an unknown path, but we try to walk, go on to change, to evolve, it's much better than sit and wait for a change, it won't happen. you would be amazed to see what you can discover by always getting up, even if you fail many times. What is important is what you learned from falling.

the key is "patience" and to "rise again" everytime.

Just like a flower needs time and work to bloom, you have to be patient and do your best to succeed!
Never consider the end, there is nothing beyond that phase, but something will change if you get up, walk and try again.

If you feel alone while getting up, get up anyway, and walk! somewhere, someday you will find people guiding you, holding you, supporting you to keep going on.

you can make if you try, get up, dry your tears, breathe, smile and go for it!

Write more than one story at a time

Sunday 16 June 2013

I think it's something writers do experience when the're already working on a story.

Sometimes an idea pops out while you're writing, but it doesn't fit what you're working on. In fact, it would fit for another story, and it starts developping itself because it remains in your mind, and you're often reminded of it of through scenes that happen in your daily life, music or thoughts...
At that moment, it can get confusing. You want to finish your first task, but you also want to discover more about the new idea or even start writing a bit.
I have been facing such situation, and will probably face it again, but here are some of my personal tips to be sure not to lose both ideas nor time:

  • Take a pause from your current project. Sometimes, working for hours, days or months on a book can be tiring and even boring when you've done nothing else. and give your other idea a chance, without of course forgetting the first one.
  • Write down the main ideas about your new story, it could be shorts notes or even a paragraph, as long as you get it down on paper. I believe that if it keeps stuck in your mind, it will disturb you when you're busy writing. it's like getting it out to make place for your first work, and saving it for the next opportunity.
  • Such feeling won't happen once, you could have done this, and a week later, it's back in your mind again with fresh ideas, just write it down and keep doing what should be done.
  • If you have lost complete interest in your first work ( it does happen ), don't destroy it! keep it in a safe place, and go the other idea you had. Finish it ( and i hope for you it will get published ) so when you're done, you can always go back to your first story.

Personally, i try to make use of this technic as much as i can, because afterwards, i have the feeling that if i get stuck between ideas, it will take a certain form of procrastination.
If you have other tips to share, feel free to do it in the comments to discuss the topic.

I wish you a nice evening and a good start for the new week!

Difference between e-reading and book reading

Monday 3 June 2013

With technology nowadays, we are able to read books on our phones, kindle, etc... But what about the paper book?
For a long time, i rejected the idea of reading it electronically. But i decided recently to give it a try, and to share my opinion about it .
So, i chose two stories that i like:
- Sherlock Holmes: a study in scarlet. ( Sir Arthur Conan Doyle )
- The Hobbit. ( J.R.R. Tolkien ).

E-book VS Book

What i have noticed when using a mobile or kindle is:
-you can save many books.
-it doesn't take space in your room, and isn't heavy to carry in a bag.
-There are options that allow you to read at night.
-Still, in case there is a malfunction, or low battery, you'll have to wait and it can be frustratring when you're reading an interesting part.
- Personally, i'm working a lot with computers at work and after that, so the last thing i have in mind before bed is a computer or a mobile phone.

When reading a paper book:
-Well, i wonder if all readers here will agree, but this is mainly my personal feeling. I love the scent of a fresh new book, it makes me eager to know what story it hides, and when i look or touch it, i feel a certain magic in my hand, as if i am about to enter a new world: the world of imagination. When i was holding Frankenstein in my hands i thought of fear, danger and sadness, when i held the hobbit i thought of adventures, creatures, magic, nature...
-A paperbook will never have low battery or be out or order for some particular reason.
-I think it's nice to have a bookshelf full with books, ( i wouldn't mind having one as big as the one in hogwarts ) it makes you want to read. But, it's not easy when you're travelling ( for example ) and you want to take a few books, because you have to restrain yourself sometimes.

So to conclude, i'd say that i do prefer paperbooks. Maybe it's because i've been used to it. But E-books are fine too. In the end, it allows you to read a good story and enjoy yourself.

So i'd love to know your opinion regarding this subject. Feel free to drop a comment!

Take care, & see you soon!

Frankenstein

Sunday 19 May 2013

I finished reading the book ( author : Mary Shelly ), and found that there was a movie version produced by Francis Ford Coppola, with Tom Hulce and Helena Bonham Carter, three artists from whom i enjoyed their work. So i definitely wanted to take a look at it.
Of course, i noticed the differences between the book and the movie but they had both expressed the cruelty of men and the consequences of gaining too much power.

Victor Frankenstein is an aspiring scientist who travelled to Ingolstadt to pursue his studies in science. Through his research, and his skills, he discovered that he could achieve a creation that none had ever dared to experience. Obsessed by the idea, he looses track of time, and spirit to complete his work: a human being.
But, a second after, the creature has opened its eyes, he realizes his mistake, and is overwhelmed by fear, shame and misery. he aborts all his work, leaves the creature, believing it's dead, and travels back to Geneva, to his family and his love Elizabeth. What he didn't know, was that the creature lived, and was left alone in an unknown world where he would be obliged to survive. But there's no use running away from the past, it always comes back to force you to look it, and Victor Frankenstein shall face the consequences of his act and take his responsibilities that he tried to deny.

To my opinion, i pitied the monster a lot and Frankenstein afterwards. all the monster desired was love, but people judged him by his appearance and chased him away like the pest. yet beauty can be reflected through the beauty of the soul.
When there is beauty in a soul, you'll find beauty on the outside.
In the book, movie and theater play, i felt this desire to hold the creature and hush him to calm. Because he was banished from feelings, rejected before given the chance to speak, his thoughts became dark, which led him to become "the monster" that all people fear.

So, i'd be happy to hear your thoughts about the movie or the book if you read it !
Take care!

The importance of editing

Tuesday 14 May 2013

hello, everyone, i went back to nature to enjoy its calm, beauty and energy. i went back to the place where i saw the moon, and my story came to life. Just the thoughts of it, excited me.
As i arrived, i decided to read at the library. i had a great view of a colourful sky surrounded by nature, it was perfect! I felt like an adventurer wandering in the woods. Also, i had " song on the lonely moutain" by Neil Finn in mind, i couldn't get enough of it at that moment.

Regarding the importance of editing your story, based on my own experience, i say it's an important, long , tiring ( sometimes frustrating ) but fruitful step in the process of finishing your book.
i remember the first version of my novel, once finished, i decided to edit it. It takes more time than writing the  story itself, but it gives you a certain satisfaction. The key, like in almost everything you do, is to be patient.
You can always leave it a moment and concentrate on something else to get fresh ideas and go back to editing. The important is to enjoy it before making it to the final result : a completed story.
In your process, you might add a few phrases or paraghrafs, delete others, or make a renewed version of the story better than your first draft. So never regret doing it, and never forget it.
So, while i'm still on the editing part, i really wanted to share my opinion about it.

Take care, and see you soon :)
Any questions ? drop it in the comments, i'll respond as soon as i can.

Common misconceptions about reading a book

Tuesday 9 April 2013

Hello everyone,

I hope you're doing well.

I would like to share with you some comments I've been receiving in my life regarding the fact that I love reading books and I noticed that most of them have no idea what they are missing.

Sure there are people that simply do not enjoy to read, but some do tend to believe that it's a boring, tiring, almost school-like activity.

"Why do you like reading anyway?" , "it's so boring" "you're going to look old if you keep reading like this"

These are the most common comments I've heard about the subject.

Honestly, it could be a case of how we view books.
Here are my reasons why I enjoy reading:

Frankenstein by Mary Shelly

Basically, it's like watching a movie, only you're reading the book like a script, and with your imagination you give images to the characters, locations, scenes. the way you see it. I like to compare it to directing.

For example, I recently finished "the picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. Even though I was a bit spoiled because of the movie, It did give me the idea to buy the book and notice that some scenes were changed. I got surprised during some parts thanks to that. Also, I listened to a nice melody, the instrumental version of "Hoshi No Suna" ( Star sand) by Gackt. Now every time I will hear it, I will remember London, the Victorian Era, and the thoughts of Dorian Gray.

In the end, I was entertained, and I had learned a few new words.

I read mostly in english, since I wish to become a writer and enjoy writing in english. The best way for me to develop my writing style is by reading and learning of it.
Of course, I also take pleasure in reading in languages such as french, arabic, dutch and german.

I'm not going to lie, I also watch the movie versions, yet they tend to attract me to read the book as well.
Books hold secrets that can not fit in the movie, since it has a limited time of broadcasting the story. When I
read the book, I feel like I'm entering a secret passage of the passage.

Reading isn't a waste of time, it's a combination of fun and knowledge. So It's best to give it a try.
After "the picture of Dorian Gray", I'm starting "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelly. The synopsis made it quite promising, I'm sure to enjoy it.

I hope it inspires you to give books a chance! Pick up something that fits your taste for starters and go for it!

Who's a book lover among my readers? Tell me your opinion about reading and what you like reading :)

Memoirs of a geisha

Wednesday 27 March 2013

The tale of a geisha who dreamed to live her life freely.
The young chiho was taken away as a child with her sister from her family ( or rather sold by her father who could no longer feed them ) to work at an okiya ( geisha house ) for a living.
Raised by a woman known by all as Okâ-san ( mother), she does the house cleaning with her friend Pumpkin and obeys to the orders of their geisha : Hatsumomo.
In the course of months, she will try to escape this okiya to go back to her village until she will understand that she can no longer run back to the past but have the face the future.

In the process of her growing up, she will learn the geisha skills and afterwards gain notoriety for her peculiar beauty ( especially her blue eyes that reminds her tutor of water and it's power ).
Her talent will be noticed and she will be exposed to okinawa as the next geisha that will dazzle everyone with her beauty and skills.

All of this seem quite enjoyable, yet to achieve such status, sacrifices will be made, challenges will be set, she will have to face lust, jealousy, desire and defend her only wish for freedom in this road she had taken to reach for that hand she had longed for. Yet, can a geisha ever gain the gift of love?

I'm already fond of japanese culture, and was bemused by the mystery surrounding the geishas, I would compare them to living puppets and watch them dance in silence.
Sadly, the word "geisha" has inspired quite a debate regarding their profession, some comparing them to prostitutes. It is indeed true that some have used the geisha status selling their bodies for sexual favours.
However, the true meaning remains that a geisha is a performing artist, a hostess that usually entertains business men with chats and dances.

The soundtrack is a true pleasure to listen to, one of my favourites is Sayuri's theme, and the one used when she performed on stage for the first time.
The storytelling is sometimes poetic, we can feel the geisha's journey; the story of a strong woman who fought to live and who whispers us to never give up.

" A geisha does not sell her body but her talent"

Nowadays, most geishas reside in Kyoto and leave the Okiya once they decide to get married to focus on their family.
I find this art fascinating. During the performance, we remaing silent to enjoy the geisha in action. I had the joy to
watch a dance troup called kikunokai at the theatre. It was years ago but I kept the book in memory of that evening. The chants were beautiful, the stories were amusing and the shamisen had reminded me of the samurais. After the show I had met the artists to congratulate them and it made me want to have a moment to perform a geisha dance, just to know how it feels to perform such different art.

For those who watched the movie, what did you think of it? Have you ever seen a live performance,
please let me know in the comments :)

The Perfume

Tuesday 5 March 2013

This is a movie that I highly appreciated for its originality. It based on the novel " the perfume" by Patrick Süskind.
The story of Jean Baptiste Grenouille ( Ben Whishaw ) who switched his gift and passion for scent into an obsession that drove him to crime. Born on the streets of Paris and abandoned by his mother at birth, he grew up in an orphanage and rapidly understood that he was gifted and that it is his only satisfaction. One day, as he was strolling in the streets, he smelled a peculiar scent, that excited him..the scent of a young woman, still in full bloom. He follows her in order to inhale her scent but ends up accidently killing her. The instant she dies, the scent fades aways, and he grows frustrated. Frustrated of having lost it, not having conserved it, he vows to look for it, to find a way to sustain this scent that plunges him into another world. When Jean Baptiste becomes a perfume seller's novice, he becomes engrossed by the idea that he will reach his goal, no matter the sacrifices.

This movie kept me focused until the end. I had no idea of what was to occur, several events kept changing the way the story was going to end. Now, I am curious to read, maybe some details have been put aside.
If you've watched the movie, I'd love to hear your reviews.

Sail Away pirates!

Sunday 27 January 2013

The hobbit

Monday 14 January 2013

the king's speech

Tuesday 8 January 2013

Have you seen the movie " The King's speech"?
I had watched it during filming classes where we had to analyze the movie. Based on a true story, the Duke of York is confronted with the idea that he might succeed to the throne instead of his elder brother.
He suffers however of stuttering, which causes a huge block to his status as the future king of England.
His father will have none of it and brings the best doctors to assist him, yet all of them fail to find the remedy to stop the stuttering permanently.
It is an interesting story, that brings to the light a well hidden secret from the royal family. During the movie, I acknowledged the pressure of protocols ( how a duke comes to address a doctor, and how little girls would speak to their father differently the moment the latter becomes king), the weight of responsability that rests on the man's shoulders for his country against an immenent war that is about to open fire: World War II.
In those moments, I saw how a high status demanded sacrifices and how crushing it felt towards a man who felt vulnerable.

This movie is quiet special because in the end it has a strong message : we can be anyone we want if we choose to believe, and even that the impossible is non existent if we choose to keep moving on.

Among the actors, we have a great cast composed of : Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush and  Michael Gambon .
