Interview : Sarah Armstrong-Garner

Friday 26 February 2016

Dear all, I hope you are doing well.
Today's subject is an interview Mrs. Sarah Armstrong Garner, author of the sinking trilogy.
The launch of the first book being today, I invite you to get acquainted with the woman behind the story.

 So let's get started:

First of all, I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this great story that led me to discover the world of Jocelyn. I’m eager to know the full details of her origins in the upcoming books.

1.Mrs. Armstrong, tell us a bit about your life as a writer?
Well, I am never alone, even when the room is completely empty. The characters in my head demand to have a voice people can hear when reading. It is walking a fine line between sanity and insanity, but I can’t imagine it any other way. I love my life as a writer. I get to visit new world without ever leaving my house. I still have my day life with my family and friends, but my mind never turns off from creating. I find myself daydreaming constantly and sometimes have to play check up in conversations.

What inspired you to write "Sinking"?
My mother’s dead was the beginning of “Sinking.” With Jocelyn’s journey I was able to escape the pain of loosing someone so close. It allowed me to disappear a little at a time, my break from reality. The story began in a shower, when I was daydreaming and grew from there. And who doesn’t love mermaids?

How long have you been writing?
A long time, when I was in elementary school, I remember writing plays for my classmate to act out on the playground. But, I didn’t realize I wanted to be a writer until college.

When did you decide that you wanted to share your writing with the public?
From the beginning, I’ve always been open with my work. I couldn’t imagine my work just sitting in a hard drive.

The story takes place in the 18th century of Ireland, is there a particular reason you choose that period of time and country?
I love the fact Jocelyn could wash to shore and Lady Edith didn’t first search for a Drivers licences. There were no medical or dental records to help find her identity. Someone could disappear or appear with no trace of who they where back then.

What is your relationship with your characters?
Sometimes I feel like a reader with them, discovering their story as they write themselves onto paper. I can tell you their favourite food and what their first words were, but I don’t know their futures fully. They seem to write their own destiny.

You wrote the dialogues of the Irish characters according to their accent, which I found a great idea to visualize the story better, are you familiar with the language or was it part of your research?
I had to do a lot of research to get the accent down. It changed a lot since the first draft.

You mentioned on your website that you're a screenwriter. Would you enjoy having "Sinking" to be a filming project someday?  Any ideas about a cast to portray your characters?
Yes! I would love “Sinking” to be on film. In fact, I have a screenplay already. I would love to see Emily Browning as Jocelyn, Max Irons as Aidan, and Alex Pettyfer as Thomas. You can go to my Pinterest board “Sinking” and see picture of them if you need a face with the names. https://www.pinterest.com/sarahtwyla/book-sinking/

What type of novels do you enjoy reading?
I love fantasy and paranormal. I just finished “Red Queen” and reading “Cinder” now, but books are amazing.

What do your plans for future projects include?
I’m in the middle of “Drifting,” which I hope to be done in six months or sooner. Then “Rising” and “Autumn in Neverland.”

Any tips for writers who wish to get published?
Continue to develop your craft and NEVER GIVE UP.

Thank you very much for your time! And I'm looking forward to read "Drifting", the second book of your trilogy.
It was my pleasure and thank you. This interview was a blast.
